In 1598, by the Edit de Nantes, King Henri IV gave the protestants the right to pratice their religion.
In 1685, by the Edit de Fontainebleau King Louis XiV canceled this right. Consequently many protestants were forced to either become catholics or to practice their religion in clandestinity ( in the “desert”) or to go abroad for instance to South Africa.
In 1789, the French revolution gave again the liberty of religion.
In 1817 a large protestant church is build in La Motte d’Aigues but as the building was reaching a too bad shape, it was replaced in 1905 by a smaller buildingwhich is still the current protestant church
